
In 1875 Czech immigrant, Joseph Bulova, opened a wholesale jewelry business in New York but he did not start actually making wrist watches until later in his career. In 1911 Bulova produced his first desk clocks and fob watches. His first range of men's jeweled watches was made in 1919. This was soon followed by a line of diamond wristwatches. Bulova Watch Co. manufactured millions of watch movements in their own Swiss plant and had them cased in US. Bulova introduced the first clock radio to the world in 1928.
He is considered a pioneer of the watch industry advertising campaigns; his first million dollar campaign was run in 1931. In 1941 Bulova aired his first TV commercial. After the US become involved in the II world war Bulova factories began manufacturing not only watches for military personnel but also torpedo mechanisms, fuses and aircraft instruments,. Around 1946 the company opened the Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking to help disabled veterans become self-sufficient.
The company developed first electronic watch called Accutron in 1950. The watch was so precise that it kept the time to within two seconds a day. During the 1960s, Bulova's Accutron timing mechanism became an integral part of space technology. A Bulova timer was placed on the moon surface to control the transmissions of vital data through the years. In recent times Bulova has presented a number of design innovations with introduction of high profile diamond watches, high quality 14-karat gold watches, sports and career-style watches. Today, Bulova remains a totally U.S.-owned company.
